June 17, 1959, was a warm, sunny day in Alabama, perfect for a getaway by the Perdido coast. Paul and Maxine Barter hit the road with four of their children. They were also joined by Paul’s brother, Jim Barter, and one of his children.
The family set up tents along the bay that day. However, all of the children, including Daniel, spent the night sleeping in Jim’s car.
One of Daniel’s brothers later reported seeing a strange man in a vehicle that was parked next to theirs. He was staring directly at them, but the boy didn’t think much of it, choosing to focus on their vacation.
On the morning of June 18, Daniel went to the store with one of his parents and came back with a bottle of Nehi soda. While the adults and the other children turned their attention to unpacking their vehicle, Danny was wandering along the shoreline, holding his soda bottle.
His mother glanced away to tend to the fishing gear. When she looked back in his direction minutes later, Danny was gone.
What should have been just another day in Perdido Bay, Alabama, turned into more than 40 years of sorrow.
What Circumstances Led to Daniel Barter’s Disappearance?
Daniel “Danny” Barter was born to Paul Stephen and Maxine Elizabeth Barter on December 12th, 1954. He was the fourth born of the seven siblings. Relatives described him as a cheerful and happy little boy who adored being around his family.
While talking about his disappearance, a distraught Maxine told the Mobile Register, “He’s such a very pretty and sweet child, I can understand why someone would want to take him, because he’s such a pretty child.”
On the 18, when Maxine could not find him in the same spot where he had been playing, the family panicked, looking everywhere, but he was gone. The Barters wasted no time and notified the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
Word got out, and over 2,000 people joined the search. Aside from local civilians, 300 sailors from nearby military bases and 150 law enforcement officers joined the search, scouring the woods and swamps for Daniel Barter.
Desperate to find a clue, they used dynamite in dozens of water holes, hoping the shockwaves would cause a body to surface. Large alligators in the area were also hunted down and killed so stomach contents could be examined.
While talking to News 5, Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery detailed the following about the drowning theory: “Because of the campsite’s proximity to the water, initial search efforts focused on Perdido Bay. Divers searched the waters, and authorities even went as far as harvesting local alligators to examine their stomachs.”
Law enforcement used boats, helicopters, horses, and dogs to search through a five-square-mile radius. This search operation lasted for more than a week before being called off.
Since Danny had been playing so close to the water, authorities even considered the possibility he drowned. During the search operation, a local diver swam down to the bottom of the bay but found nothing.
Once the drowning angle was ruled out, the authorities started investigating the possibility of an abduction, and what they found was eerie, to say the least.
Were There Signs Before Daniel Barter Went Missing?
During the investigation, authorities brought in a trio of prize-winning bloodhounds to get a scent. Surprisingly, none of the bloodhounds stopped near the water.
They instead tracked his scent to a nearby clay road. After searching for him everywhere in the swamp and surrounding areas, it was clear he did not simply wander off.
While talking to Mobile Register, Maxine shared, “I had first believed that despite Danny’s fear of water, he had wandered into the water and drowned, but not now. I believe he probably walked up the road, and someone picked him up.”
This was the moment Daniel Barter’s disappearance turned into a high-stakes criminal abduction investigation.
The search perimeter shifted drastically from the coast of Perdido Bay to the surrounding roads. Authorities were now working under the assumption that Daniel Barter was either lured or abducted by an unidentified captor.
In fact, in the weeks before Danny vanished, the Barter family started noticing small but unsettling events.
A month before his disappearance, Maxine noticed a mystery man parked right in front of their residence. When she walked toward the driver to ask what he wanted, he held up a newspaper to cover his face and sped away.
Around the same time, a neighbor spotted someone peering into the window of the room where the children slept. The man left before anyone raised the alarm, but left footprints behind.
The Mobile Police Department was called to the Barter residence immediately after the neighbor reported the window peeper. Police took photographs and poured plaster castings of the footprints as evidence.
Over the years, these original footprint casts and case photographs were lost or destroyed by the department.
No one could have guessed these signs were an omen of what was coming. When Mobile police also stepped in to re-examine the terrifying incidents leading up to Daniel Barter going missing, the incidents implied a targeted stalking campaign.
As for the motive, it wasn’t for ransom, unlike the Margaret Ellen Fox case, where the abductors made a call. According to the Little Boy Lost – Danny Barter Case Memorial Site, Maxine Barter said, “I know it wasn’t for ransom because we have no money saved and are supporting our children on my husband’s income.”
Unfortunately, this is where the case stalled. The authorities had no clue exactly who the stalker was, or whether he was even connected to Daniel Barter’s disappearance.
Searching for Daniel Through the Silence
The possibility of finding Daniel Barter alive just kept dwindling over the years. Grief of ambiguous loss can be too much to bear for a family mostly comprising children.
According to Minding therapy, family therapist Pauline Boss said, “It freezes the grief process. It prevents closure, and it causes families to remain in a state of suspended animation, unable to grieve fully and unable to move forward with their lives.”
In the years following his disappearance, the couple traveled back and forth to Perdido Bay asking locals for leads, and checking out seasonal properties that might not have been noticed.
By now, the Barters had an idea that Daniel might’ve been stalked before he disappeared and faced the looming dread of potentially losing more children to abduction.
In 1963, Paul and Maxine gathered their surviving children and moved to Texas for a fresh start. Despite their attempts to move on, the family never ceased their efforts to look for Daniel Barter.
However, the case hit a major roadblock in 1965, when Paul Barter passed away from a heart attack. One of Daniel’s biggest advocates was gone.
The progress on the case was much slower than before. Maxine continued to raise their remaining children alone while coordinating with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office on any new leads.
Maxine kept Daniel’s memory alive in the household until she also passed away in November of 1995.
Memories of Daniel Barter didn’t fade with his parents. The surviving siblings took on the work of archiving what they knew and continuing the search.
Even after the case went cold, none of them gave up. They named Danny’s older brother, Mike Barter, as the family’s official spokesperson.
Resurrecting the Cold Case
In the decade after Daniel Barter’s disappearance, his siblings not only endured the trauma of losing a loved one, but also witnessed their parents fading away due to grief.
During 2006, they actively lobbied the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), so that they could apply modern forensic art. It is a modern forensic tool that has helped in bringing more than 1,800 missing children back home, according to NCMEC reports.
Once the age-progressed pictures of Daniel Barter surfaced, the case started gaining traction nationally.
In 2008, they created a digital lighthouse. The Barter siblings built and maintained a website for Daniel Barter to raise awareness of the case and generate new leads.
They documented the 1959 timeline leading to his disappearance. To help the masses connect with Daniel Barter’s story, they even uploaded rare family photos.
Their official mission statement on CNN states, “We strongly believe that someone out there knows what happened to Danny and possibly knows him as another identity… We’ve never doubted that he’s out there. Until they prove otherwise, we hope one day we will be reunited.”
In 2008, the FBI received key information from a conversation overheard by a local citizen in a doctor’s office, which was credible enough to bring the case back to life.
According to CNN, FBI Special Agent Angela Tobon added her take, saying, “Even if [people] think it’s insignificant, it’s probably not. Each little piece of the puzzle may not mean something, but when you put it all together, you get the big picture.”
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI officially reopened the case on June 18, 2009. Daniel Barter’s family and loved ones gathered for the anniversary vigil at Perdido Bay.
CNN reported Mike’s sentiments, stating, “Our mother passed away without ever knowing, but she always said she hoped someone took him to love him. We are still holding onto that exact same hope today that he is out there somewhere, living a life, maybe even with a family of his own.”
At the end of the day, everyone hoped that Daniel Barter was safe, happy, and most importantly, alive. Though there have been no breakthroughs to date, the case remains open, and the family is still trying to gather as many tips and leads as possible.
Is There Still Hope for Answers?
The association between the Barter family and Alabama Cold Case Advocacy (ACCA) began in early 2023. Daniel Barter’s case is currently one of the oldest active missing-child cases in Alabama.
They have worked alongside the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office to ensure that his case is back in the public eye and they get as many tips as possible.
They also started a continuous billboard loop on Highway 59 in Robertsdale on February 20th, 2026, marking a new chapter in the case.
These billboards will feature an age-progression image of Daniel Barter. While talking to News 5, Sheriff Anthony Lowery also emphasized the agency’s moral duty toward Daniel Barter, saying, “If he’s out there and he’s alive or there’s some possibility that we can bring some resolution to this, we still owe it to him.”
The objective of the campaign is to ensure the billboard catches the attention of heavy-vehicle traffic heading down local beaches ahead of the spring and summer season.
Today, his remaining family still tries to do their best to get answers to the questions that have haunted their whole lives. Hoping to reunite with a brother to bring some sort of resolution to the decades-long grief.
