Around 8:20 p.m. on New Year’s Day, officers were dispatched to a home on Quelqueshue Street in Sulphur, Louisiana, for a report of a shooting. Inside, police found a 1-year-old child with a gunshot wound. The child was pronounced dead, and the girl’s mother, Kristin Bass, 28, was arrested and booked on a first-degree murder charge.

Bass was being held on a $10 million bond, according to the report. Investigators have not released a detailed account of what led to the call, and the case remains under investigation.

At this stage, the lines between confirmed facts and allegations matter. Authorities have confirmed the shooting, the child’s death, and the charge against Bass. A fuller narrative, including motive and intent, has not been laid out publicly. Much of what the public knows about the moments inside the home comes from family members, not from court filings.

What police say happened on Quelqueshue Street in Sulphur on Jan. 1

In a news release, the Sulphur Police Department said officers arrived to find the child had been shot and killed, and that the investigation led them to arrest Bass on a count of first-degree murder. Police have not publicly identified the firearm, described the child’s injuries beyond confirming she was shot, or said who else was inside the residence when officers arrived.

Why Kristin Bass is charged with first-degree murder

The charge filed against Bass is the highest-level homicide count under Louisiana law. Police have not specified what evidence they relied on, and prosecutors have not yet released a public statement explaining how they will argue intent or circumstances.

Those details usually surface later through charging documents, bond hearings, and testimony. For now, the public record reflects an arrest, a first-degree murder booking, and a bond set at $10 million.

Bradley Moss describes the moments after the gunshot

The most detailed public account of the seconds after the shooting has come from Bradley Moss, who identified the child as Acelynn Moss. In an interview with KPLC, he said he heard a loud boom, ran into the room, and saw Bass holding a gun while their 2-year-old daughter cried nearby.

Moss told the station that Bass made statements he interpreted as religious and threatening, including a claim that she had “sent” the baby “to God,” and that he feared she intended to harm the older child as well. Those statements have not been independently confirmed by police or in court records that are publicly available at this time.

The 2-year-old in the room and the custody decision

Moss said the older child was in the same room at the time of the gunshot. The station reported that the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services took custody of the 2-year-old after the incident.

Police have not described the child’s condition or whether she witnessed the shooting, and authorities have not discussed placement plans. Those decisions often move through separate proceedings focused on safety and guardianship while a criminal case is pending.

What remains unknown as the investigation continues

Even with an arrest, key questions are unanswered. Police have not said where in the home the shooting happened, whether anyone attempted lifesaving aid before first responders arrived, or whether the weapon was recovered at the scene.

Bass’ court timeline is also unclear, including when she will first appear before a judge and whether she has an attorney. Investigators typically rely on autopsy findings and forensic testing in a gun death, but none of those results have been released publicly.
